FANTÔME TOUCAN is a collaboration between the contemporary tenor Karl Laquit and the author and sound artist Étienne Michelet. As a singer, Karl Laquit lent his voice to Toco, the main character of the book Toucan Fantôme written by Étienne Michelet and published by Abrüpt in 2021. Étienne Michelet, as a sound artist, has created acoustic and electronic arrangements, searching haunted textures to give a material where Toco can take life and find his own voice. Through the presence of this loving bird, the Dido's lamentation resonates, just like in the book, crossing the piece like a memory. This sound project has been carried on strange wings between France and South Korea, on some fairy nights, giving birth to an extatic piece with acid tessitures.

Il y a quelques mois de cela, alors que je cherchais de nouvelles interprétations de la lamentation de Didon de Purcell, je découvrais la voix, la présence extraordinaire de Karl Laquit. Une vidéo YouTube, et Karl debout, la main posée sur un piano, et la voix devenue haute-contre de Didon. Au fil des jours, une idée s’est développée dans mon esprit, en repensant à Didon, déjà présente dans mon texte Toucan Fantôme (Abrüpt), en repensant surtout à cette image de Karl : Lui proposer une relecture sonore du texte, et donner une voix au toucan… 
 
Après des échanges vertigineux entre la France, Séoul, la nuit souvent, et des sessions d’enregistrements magnifiques, une pièce est née, comme un reflet du livre : Fantôme Toucan. Mes productions électroniques ont trouvé une élévation magique grâce à la voix, aux voix de Karl Laquit...
